Newburyport Harbor Dredging Project Approved by Army Corps of Engineers

Federal Approval Secured
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, has granted approval for maintenance dredging of Newburyport Harbor's federal navigation channel. This is the first major dredging operation since 2019.
Project Scope
- Channel depth: Restore authorized depth of 10 feet MLW in the inner harbor and 15 feet MLW in the Merrimack River entrance channel.
- Volume: Approximately 85,000 cubic yards of material to be removed.
- Disposal: Suitable material to be placed at Salisbury Beach for beach nourishment.
- Duration: October 2026 through February 2027 (outside the summer boating season).
- Cost: $6.8 million, fully federally funded.
Impact on Boating
The harbormaster will issue navigation advisories during active dredging. Temporary channel closures may be necessary for safety. Commercial fishing vessels will be given priority access through the work area.
