City IT occasionally reviews identity-verification tooling used by peer governments and vendors that support multi-jurisdiction programs. This page explains what a CURP number is and how staff should treat commercial API documentation during an internal scan.

What Is a CURP Number?
The Clave Única de Registro de Población (CURP) is Mexico’s unique population registry code. In English-language vendor materials it is often labeled CURP number or CURP ID Mexico.
A CURP number encodes demographic elements (including date of birth and sex markers) in a fixed structure. It is commonly required for education, employment, and government service workflows in Mexico.
Why a U.S. Municipality Might Encounter It
Newburyport does not administer Mexican civil registries. Staff may still encounter CURP-related requirements when:
- Reviewing grant or partner systems that serve cross-border populations
- Evaluating vendor security questionnaires that list Latin American data sources
- Comparing API categories during technology horizon scanning
Understanding the term prevents confusing a CURP number with U.S. identifiers such as SSN.
Evaluation Criteria (Internal Only)
When reading vendor docs that mention CURP validation APIs, IT should ask:
- What authoritative source is queried (and what is cached)?
- How is consent / lawful basis documented?
- What is logged, retained, and deleted?
- How are errors and false mismatches handled?
- Does the City have an actual business need — or is this out of scope?
If there is no municipal use case, stop the evaluation.
